Dental Assisting Career Area

Overview

The dental assisting program is an exciting option for a career in dental assisting or providing a foundation for advancement in the dental health professions. Combining the use of assessing, planning and implementing quality care to the dental patient with the use of state of the art technology in our cutting edge dental facility. This experience will prepare the students for externships and co-op in the local dental community, evolving into proficient clinicians, improving success for employability.

Upon graduation the dental assisting student can achieve:

  • OSHA 10-hour card: General Industry
  • CPR certification/healthcare provider
  • Certificates of knowledge-based competency for passing the Dental Assisting National Board (DANB®) Infection Control Exam (ICE®) and Radiation Health and Safety (RHS®)

Freshman Year

  • dental anatomy
  • identifying structures of the oral cavity
  • head and neck anatomy
  • medical/dental terminology
  • taking vital signs
  • initial exposure to infection control/OSHA health and safety regulations
  • dental materials, laboratory assignments
  • dental office management
  • professionalism through personal hygiene habits, interpersonal communication, and appearance

Sophomore Year

  • infection control
  • microbiology
  • patient care
  • dental charting
  • basic chairside assisting
  • instrument identification and transfer
  • anesthesia and sedation
  • sterilization
  • identification/handling of hazardous materials

Junior Year

  • radiation health and safety
  • exposure of dental radiographs using DXTTR® mannequins
  • processing and mounting film based x-rays as well as exposing digital records
  • use of panorex digital x-ray system gaining competency in identification of structural landmarks
  • dental specialties (endodontics, oral surgery, orthodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics) and their affiliations externships and co-op
  • professionalism, written and oral communication, as well as peer and affiliate relationship building

Senior Year

  • externships and co-op
