This project was a collaboration with both the financial algebra and business technology instructors and students. The financial algebra students are being taught budgeting and the importance of tracking where their money is being spent. Students are earn a "salary" with all of the appropriate state and federal taxes withheld, they are also given opportunities to use their earnings to puchase things throughout the year with a ultimate goal of saving enough (budgeting wisely) to be exempt from the final exam. The business technology students met with their “clients” reviewed their W2 Forms to ensure the data necessary to process the Massachusetts Form 1 and Federal 1040 forms was present. The students prepared a state and federal tax form for 85 students, performed internal audits of peer work, produced audit reports, scheduled meetings with their clients, and wrote out checks for refund amounts. This collaboration is a great project-based activity reinforcing the business lessons taught through the shop and the related classroom.
