Metal Fabrication & Joining Technologies Courses

Freshman Year

Shop

Freshmen students in the Metal Fabrication program will layout and fabricate Sheetmetal projects and learn how to safely operate all Sheetmetal equipment. Students will also learn to safely operate the power shear, ironworker, hand held grinders and all hand and power tools. Students will learn how to set-up and operate oxygen-acetylene (Gas) welding and brazing equipment. Students will oxy-acetylene weld with and without filler rod. Students will learn how to set-up and maintain SMAW (Stick) welding equipment. Students will practice starting the arc and welding in the flat position. In related, students will study Sheetmetal, SMAW (Stick) welding, Plasma arc cutting, and Oxy-acetylene theory. Students will also acquire Hot Work Permits.

 

Sophomore Year

Shop

Sophomore students in the Metal Fabrication program will learn how to layout and fabricate basic ductwork and fittings. Students will also learn how to measure, fabricate, and weld both straight and stair railings. Students will learn how to set up and maintain all GMAW (MIG) welding equipment, and FCAW (Flux Core). Students will learn how to weld steel, stainless steel, and aluminum with MIG and FCAW. Students will learn how to safely operate all bandsaws and cutting equipment in the shop. Students will continue welding SMAW (Stick) in all positions using 6011 and 7018 welding rods. In related students will be introduced to blueprint reading and drawing. Students will also acquire OSHA 10-hour manufacturing safety certification.

Junior Year

Shop

Junior students in the Metal Fabrication program will learn how to set-up and maintain GTAW (TIG) equipment. Students will practice welding mild steel, stainless steel, and aluminum using GTAW air- and water-cooled torches. Students will also practice SMAW welding vertical and overhead v-groove plates, for their D1.5 Structural welding certification. Administered by a certified welding inspector from the Massachusetts Department of Transportation. Students will also learn how to safely operate a CNC plasma arc cutting table and CNC press brake. Juniors will hone their learned skills on various outside projects.

Senior Year

Shop

Senior students in the Metal Fabrication program will continue to improve skills in all welding processes. Including pipe welding. Students will work on outside projects for the community, school, and themselves. Students will be able to take advantage of the cooperative education program. In related senior students will learn advanced blueprint reading and welding symbols.
