Cooperative Education Requirements

Employer


  • Provide training in safety and emergency policies and procedures for the work site.
  • Follow OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) regulations for worksite safety.
  • Adhere to State and Federal Labor Laws (see Labor Laws link)
  • Retain the Cooperative Employment Permit for students under the age of 18.
  • Return the Cooperative Employment Permit when co-op employment is terminated.
  • Provide the student with a qualified and experienced worker responsible for their direct and constant supervision.
  • Provide the student with a progressive and diversified learning experience that will provide them with technical and employability skills.
  • Provide workers’ compensation insurance for the student during employment.
  • Provide proof of workers’ compensation insurance.
  • Provide oral and written evaluation of the co-op student’s work site performance through the completion of weekly reports and discussions with the Director of Cooperative Education and/or the student’s career area Instructors.
  • Provide at least 30 hours of meaningful employment per co-op week, 6 hours per day (exceptions must be approved through the Director of Cooperative Education.)
  • Pay the student a fair wage (at least the state minimum wage) for the type of work performed.
  • Notify the Director of Cooperative Education if the student is absent for any reason.
  • Notify the Director of Cooperative Education if the student fails to follow company policies or regulations
  • Notify the Director of Cooperative Education if there is not enough work to support the 30-hour minimum hour requirement
  • Notify the Director of Cooperative Education if the student is injured, or if the police department is called to handle any situation involving a student.
  • Submit the required weekly evaluation which includes the student’s grades for the week.
  • Complete a CORI (Criminal Offender Record Information) application for any individuals working with or driving the student in a one-on-one situation or for the direct supervisor for students working in a group setting.
  • Abide by Equal Opportunity Employment guidelines.
  • Complete a Statement of Assurance Form.
  • Schedule a site safety visit prior to placing the student on Co-op and throughout the student’s employment.

Student


Meet the grade requirements as follow:

  • Junior Year Shop and Related:
    • End of Quarter Two or Quarter Three must have a minimum quarter grade of 80 and a minimum yearly average of 80.
  • Senior Year Shop and Related:
    • Yearly grade of 80 at the end of the junior year and did not fail the 4th quarter of the junior year.
  • Academics:
    • Students must have a 70 or better in each academic class.
    • Students entering the co-op program after the First Quarter must have a passing yearly average for each academic class in addition to the minimum term grade requirement of 70.
    • Once placed on co-op if grades fall below 70, students will be placed on probation until the next marking period,
    • If no improvement is observed students will be suspended or removed from the co-op program.
  • Must complete one and a half years in their career area, typically following the Second Quarter of the junior year.
  • Must have passed OSHA 10-hour Certification.
  • Must obtain approval from the career area instructor.
  • Meet attendance requirements no more than 3 unexcused absences or tardies in a quarter. Once placed on co-op, exceeding this limit will result in being placed on probation and failure to improve will result in suspension or removal from the co-op program.
  • Meet the discipline requirements, demonstrate good behavior and citizenship. Any violation of the school’s disciplinary code of conduct may result in an inability to be placed on co-op or may result in the removal from co-op.
  • Schedule an initial meeting with the Director of Cooperative Education and bring a portfolio including an up-to-date resume, references, OSHA Certificate, and any industry specific certifications.
  • You must abide by the Child Labor Laws.
  • You must provide your own source of transportation to work.
  • You must report to work when scheduled.
  • You must notify your employer and the school as early as possible of any absence from the co-op program.
  • Must meet the minimum hour requirements.
  • You must turn in the co-op timecard report each Monday (or the next academic day) following the co-op week.
  • You must submit, once per month, a copy of the paystub, screen capture of direct deposit or screen capture of application showing earnings, withholdings, and hours work.
  • You must notify the Director of Cooperative Education immediately of any on-the-job injuries.
  • You must notify the Director of Cooperative Education any time there are workplace concerns.
  • You must notify the Director of Cooperative Education immediately if they will be in school for any reason.
  • You must notify the Director of Cooperative Education if you are terminated from your co-op placement or are considering leaving yourco-op placement.
  • You must report to the school if the employer does not have enough work for the week (hours will fall below the minimum requirement).
  • Sports and clubs are not an excuse to fall below the required 30-hour minimum.
  • You must complete make-up assignments for any co-op absences.
  • You must report to school the day following termination of co-op employment.
  • You will not “job-jump,” make a habit of taking a job and leaving a job to find another job.
