Medication protocol
Medication protocol
NO STUDENT is allowed to carry or take any medication (prescribed or over-the-counter) in school unless all the necessary paperwork is completed and on file in the Nurse’s Office. The only exception is students may carry asthma inhalers and/or Epi-pens after completion of necessary paperwork as described above and only after consultation with the school nurse. All medication must be delivered to the school nurse in properly labeled pharmacy containers or in original packaging for over-the-counter medications
Over-the-counter, acetaminophen (Tylenol) 325 to 650 mg and ibuprofen (Advil, Motrin) 200 to 400 mg (both over-the-counter doses) and antacids (Tums) can be dispensed by the school nurses for minor discomfort and ONLY after a written parent(s)/guardian(s) consent form is on file in the Nurse’s Office. Verbal (telephone) consents will only be accepted three times. The written parent(s)/guardian(s) consent must be updated annually at the start of each school year.
Prescription medications, asthma inhalers, Epi-pens, and any over-the-counter medication (excluding Acetaminophen and Ibuprofen unless the dosage is greater than the dose described above) require a physician’s order in addition to parent(s)/guardian(s) consent.
The physician’s order must include the student’s diagnosis, the drug name, dosage, route of administration, time(s) to be given, and any possible side effects that may occur. Medication forms for over-the-counter and prescription medications are available from the nurse upon request or on the website. All physicians’ medication orders must be renewed annually at the start of each year or in the event there is a change in medication or dosage.
NO MEDICATION WILL BE ADMINISTERED UNLESS THE APPROPRIATE FORMS ARE ON FILE IN THE NURSE’S OFFICE. THERE WILL BE NO EXCEPTIONS.
No expired medications will be administered. Expired medications will be disposed of by the nurses.
