Freshmen Exploratory

Exploratory is an exciting opportunity for students to immerse themselves in different career technical programs every other week for the first half of freshman year. Each week-long exploratory is designed to introduce "explorers" with a general understanding of the curriculum, workload, and future career opportunities within that program area. Students and their parents/guardians are encouraged to enter the exploratory process with an open mind and a willingness to challenge any assumptions they might have regarding program offerings. Each career area offered at Bay Path is evolving. Please take time to review the exploratory language posted below and within the 2025-2026 Student Handbook. Please note that no exploratory program changes will take place until after the first week of exploratory is complete. We cannot guarantee open seats in shop programs and students are only allowed to change one exploratory shop. Questions? Please reach out to Ms. Corriveau, Grade 9 Guidance Counselor at MCorriveau@baypath.net.

As outlined in the Student Handbook:

Freshmen will participate in an exploratory program that will allow them to explore nine Career and Vocational Technical Education (CVTE) programs from September through January, before being placed into their permanent CVTE program. As part of the application for admission, each student is asked to rank all the CVTE programs offered from their first choice of interest to their last choice. The district schedules the students to explore their highest ranked CVTE programs. An effort is made to place all students in their first three choices and then fill their remaining exploratory schedule with CVTE programs, including programs that are non-traditional for the gender they have selected on their application.
At the conclusion of the ninth exploratory, the students are given the opportunity to re-rank their preferences from the explored CVTE programs for placement in their final CVTE program.
Each student earns a daily shop grade, calculated using the District’s Common Grading Rubric which includes the following weighting:

  • Workmanship – 25%
  • Safety – 20%
  • Competency – 20%
  • Employability – 20%
  • Attendance – 15%
Final CVTE program placement will be based on the following weighting:
  • 60% of shop grades
  • 30% related grades
  • 10% discipline
The students with the highest average will be admitted into their first CVTE program selection.
In the event of a tie, CVTE program placement will be determined by the following:
  • Highest grade in the first choice CVTE program
  • Highest related grade in the first choice CVTE program
  • Highest academic average
Each program has a predetermined capacity. When a program exceeds its capacity for enrollment, students are placed, depending on available seats and average overall score, into one of their 2nd through 9th program choices according to the student’s ranking based on the above criteria. Students can earn acceptance into their first choice CVTE program at the end of the exploratory program, but final program placement is extremely competitive, and top choice placement is not guaranteed.
