Health Technology
What is Health Technology?
Health Technology will prepare students for the countless career options in Medicine. Training includes direct patient care both physical and emotional, anatomy, physiology, nutrition, medical terminology, and EKG performance and interpretation. The students are trained in CPR, First Aid, Person-Centered Dementia care, and they have the opportunity to become a Certified Nursing Assistant and an EKG technician. Due to our wonderful community partners students are able to attend clinical rotations beginning freshman year through graduation. The students attend clinical two days a week for valuable real-life work experience. This course will be used as a base of knowledge for future medical careers.
What does Health Technology look like at Bay Path?
EKG Technician Program
Senior students will complete the EKG Technician program. This is a rigorous course of study that involves the anatomy and physiology of the heart, the skill of performing EKG's and basic interpretations of heart rhythms. The students will have classroom instruction, skills in the lab and clinical at acute care hospitals. Upon successful completion of the course students have the opportunity to become Nationally Certified.
Certified Nursing Assistant
Upon successful completion of the Department of Public Health approved nurse aide program, students will take the exam to become Certified. The program includes required direct-patient care skills performed in the lab and clinical experience in long term care.
Clinical Measurements
Students practice vital signs including pulse, temperature, respirations, blood pressure, pulse oximetry and pain assessments. The students perform vision, hearing, height and weight screenings.
Range of Motion
Range of motion is the ability of a joint to move freely. The students are instructed in both active and passive range of motion. This skill is vital to a patient's ability to maintain, or restore a previous level of function.
Dementia Training
The students are trained using the Alzheimer's Associations Person-Centered Dementia care: A Habitation Training Curriculum. They will also have clinical experience at an adult day program and a long-term care setting.
Infection Control Measures
The students become proficient in infection control measures that prevent the spread of infections in healthcare settings. They are instructed how and when to use personal protective equipment (PPE).
